Pitaah was a social movie released on January 4, 2002. The movie was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and produced by Avinash Adik. The significant roles in the movie were played by Sanjay Dutt, Sachin Khedekar, Nandita Das and Anjan Srivastava while the presence of Om Puri and Siddharth supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Anand Raj Anand and the songs were sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Rahul Ranade, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh and Sonu Nigam.

With the movie Pitaah, the successful combination of Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh Manjrekar is back. There had been many movies like Maa, Beta, Chacha Bhatija but not one like Pitaah. Director Mahesh Manjrekar agrees that there had been not a single movie on father and thus decided to make one. This is the story of a father who does everything that was required for his kids and family. The story is based in North India breaking the myth that Mahesh Manjrekar’s films have Maharashtrian flavor.

The story of the movie revolves completely around a mazdoor and a father Rudra ( Sanjay Dutt ) who is working for a zamindar Thakur Avadh Narayan Singh ( Om Puri ). The movie illustrates the problems he faces and what he does to overcome them. Rudra has a responsible wife Paro ( Nandita Das ) who are leading a simple life and did everything required for their children. The film also displays the adverse systems that are still prevailing in our society like caste system.
