Bollywood movie, Purab Aur Paschim, directed by Manoj Kumar was released in the year 1970. The movie starred Manoj Kumar and Saira Banu in the lead roles while while Pran, Ashok Kumar and Prem Chopra also played significant characters in the film. The superhit music of the film was given by Kalyanji Anandji and the songs were sung by Mahendra Kapoor, Mukesh, Lata Mangehskar, Manhar Udhas, Usha Utthap etc. The movie did excellent business at the box office window and became one of the highest grosser movie of that year.

The movie starts with Harnam ( Pran ) who betrays a freedom fighter ( Ashok Kumar ) and in return get rewarded by Britishers. The freedom fighter gets killed by the Britishers leaving behind his whole family. After several years, Bharat ( Manoj Kumar ), son of that freedom fighter goes to britian for persuaing higher studies. He get shocked after spending some time there when he sees the people from Indian origin completely fascinated towards foreign culture.

He meets with a family who has became completely westernized. He takes the challaenge to make them realise about their real culture and their roots. In the process, he also falls in love with Preeti ( Saira Banu ), who is also Indian by origin but now considers herself a britisher. Bharat manage to make the family realise that one should not forget his roots and culture. He then returns to India alongwith that family. Preeti also accompany him to there. But there is a surprise waiting for bothe of them in India. What is the surprise?
