The horror and a family drama movie, Purana Mandir was released on October 19, 1984. Kanta Ramsay produced while Shyam Ramsay and Tulsi Ramsay directed the movie. The lead cast of the movie included Aarti Gupta, Pradeep Kumar, Mohnish Behl and Anirudh Aggarwal while Puneet Issar, Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Satish Shah played the supporting roles. Asha Bhosle and Alka Yagnik sung the songs while Ajit Singh gave the music.

Suman ( Aarti Gupta ) , resides in an affluent lifestyle with her father ,Thakur Ranvir Singh ( Pradeep Kumar ) and an unmarried aunt, Damyanti in Bombay. These people happen to be the descendants of Raja Hariman Singh of Bijapur. One day, Ranvir discovers that Suman is in love with a middle classed man, Sanjay ( Mohnish Behl ) .He expresses his disapproval about their relationship and warns her not to meet or see him again.

When she insists him, he informs her that their family is cursed by a vicious, flesh-eating evil spirit named Samri ( Ajay Aggarwal ) about 200 years ago that still continues. This curse targets the females of their family. The females are dreadfully changed after reproducing the first offspring and go through painful sufferings followed by death. Treating this as a mere fallacy, Suman and Sanjay, along with Sanjay’s friend, Anand and his wife, Sapna elope to Bijapur. Soon, a virtual and cruel evil spirit, Samri who is out to kill the residue of the Singh family and targets them.
