The movie Rang De Basanti more popularly known as RDB was released on 26th January 2006, the day also being the Republic Day of India. The movie under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures was directed by Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. The movie stars Aamir Khan, Alice Patten, Siddharth, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Atul Kulkarni, R Madhavan, Waheeda Rehman. The music is directed by A R Rahman and the singers include Harshdeep Kaur, A R Rahman, Aamir Khan, Daler Mehndi, Mohit Chouhan, Lata Mangeshkar.

The film is divided in two time periods, one being about the legendary freedom fighters and the other revolving about a group of fun freak college going students, though parallels have been drawn between them. The film starts when Sue (Alice Patten), on finding her grandfather’s diary comes to India to make a documentary on freedom fighters. For the characters of her documentary she hired DJ (Aamir Khan), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), Karan (Siddharth) and Sukhi (Sharman Joshi).

At first where the friends were careless and looking for fun but soon they started realizing the actual spirits of the freedom fighters within themselves. The actual story started when the MiG crash of Fl. Let. Ajay Rathod (Madhavan), the love of Sonia (Soha) was reported as the careless driving of the pilot by the Defense Minister. The friends then killed the Minister and entered a radio station to confess to the world for what they have done. But the commandos, on getting the news, attacked the station and the climax was sad. The film carried a good message especially for the young generations.
