Bollywood movie, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, written and directed by Manoj Kumar was releleased in the year 1974. The movie starred Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman in lead roles while Amitabh Bachchan, Moushmi Chatterjee and Prem Nath also played important roles in the movie. The music of the film was given by Laxmikant Pyarelal and the songs were sung by Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor etc. The movie did well at the box office and won several Filmfare awards under different category.

The movie starts with Bharat ( Manoj Kumar ), who has the responsibility to look after his family. His father has just retired. His family comprises of two younger brothers, Vijay ( Amitabh Bachchan ) and Deepak ( Dheeraj Kumar ) and a sister of marriage age. Though Bharat is a college graduate but he failed to get any job. He then starts working as a low-paid singer. But his girlfriend, Sheetal ( Zeenat Aman ) is not happy with his decision. Bharat’s younger brother, Vijay, leaves home to join the army.

Bharat’s girlfriend, Sheetal, starts working as a secetary of a rich businessman Mohan ( Shashi Kapoor ). Both of them get attracted to each other. Mohan proposes marriage to Sheetal which she readily accepts as she don‘t want to live in poverty. On the other hand, Bharat’s sister Champa also finds a guy for her but Bharat has no money to marry her. Bharat gets heavily depressed. Then he meets a poor girl, Tulsi ( Moushmi Chatterjee ) and Sardar Harnam Singh ( Prem Nath ).
