Bollywood action drama, Roti, directed by Manmohan desai was released on 11 October 1974. The movie starred Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz in lead roles while Nirupa Roy, Master Titu, Jeevan, Sujit Kumar and Jagdeep also played imporatant roles in the film. The superhit music of the film was given by muisc director duo Laxmikant Pyarelal while the songs were sung by Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar etc. The Movie was an instant hit and received appreciations for its evergreen melodious music from the audience.

The movie starts with Mangal Singh ( Rajesh Khanna ), who is a renowned criminal involved in several robberies. He is a very good human being at his heart and wants to leave his profession. He is arrested by Police in the case of a murder and sentenced to death. But he escapes from being hanged to death and run away from Police. His helicopter is hot down by Police and it is assumed by police that Mangal is no more. Mangal, who is still alive, takes this as a oppurtunity to leave his past life back. He decides to start a new life.

He then goes to a village and finds a job as a school-teacher. He meets with a beautiful girl, Bijli ( Mumtaz ) and fall in love ithe her. He pretends to be a close friend of a local boy, Shravan. He starts living with Shravan’s parents and name himself as Ramu. Later Mangal comes to know that Shravan is the same guy who he killed while escaping from the police. Police inspector ( Sujit Kumar ) finds out that Mangal is till alive and visits that village to arrest him. But after arriving there he changes his decision of arresting Mangal. Why inspector has changed his decision? Will Mangal be able to live a happy life in future or not?
