Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha starrer comedy movie, Safed Jhoot, was released in the year 1977. The movie was directed by Basu Chatterjee. The other starcast of the movie includes Deven Verma, Vinod Mehra, Ashok Kumar, Geeta Siddharth, Mithu Mukherjee and Pradeep Kumar in important roles. The hit evergreen music of the movie was directed by the veteran music director Shyamal Mitra while the songs were rendered by K. J. Yesudas, Asha Bhonsle etc.

Kamla Gulati ( Vidya Sinha ) is living a middle class lifestyle alongwith her elder brother, Gulati ( Ashok Kumar ) in their palatial house. They are forced to live alone after the sudden death of their parents. Gulati gets a job in a firm. He get shocked when he reveals that his sister has eloped with a guy, who is supposed to be her boyfriend. Gulati has no clue about her and her boyfriend. Few years later, he finds the dead body of her pregnant sister. He believes that her boyfriend must have killed her. Years later, Gulati is now working as the president of an organization. Vinod Thakur ( Vinod Mehra ) is working as the Vice President of the same organization.

Gulati decides to take a break from his work and visits Panchgani. There he meets with a woman named Vinodini ( Mithu Mukherjee ), who is the daughter of T. N. Gulati. Gulati starts treating her like her own real sister. He learns that a guy named Ramu ( Amol Palekar ) is trying to woo her. Gulati tries to threaten Ramu as he does not want Vinodini to meet the same end which Kamla faced.
