Bollywood movie, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, directed by Raj Kapoor was released on 22 March 1978. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman in lead roles. The movie was distributed under the banner of Shemaroo video Pvt. Ltd. The superhit music of the film was given by the famous music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the songs were sung by Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Nitin Mukesh, Bhupinder Singh etc. the film established Zeenat as the sex symbol of bollywood industry. The movie went on to do well at the box office and became on of the biggest hit of that year.

The movie starts with Rupa ( Zeenat Aman ), who is the daughter of Pandit Shayam Sundar ( Kanhaiyalal ) and lives in a village. She was burned by a pot of oil on one side of her face and that makes her look ugly. However, she has deep faith in God and she believes that one day she will meet with the man who will love her internal beauty rather than physical appearance. Rajeev ( Shashi Kapoor ), who is an engineer come to oversee the village to bulid a major dam.

Rupa has the habit of visiting temple in the morning. Rajeev hears her beautiful and melodious voice while she was singing a bhajan and instantly falls in love with her. Rajeev sees only one side of her face and she looks beautiful to him. He asks her father to give permission to marry Rupa. They both get married to each other. But on the wedding night when Rajeev sees her full face he refuses to accept her as his wife.
