Yesteryear superhit movie, Sharmilee, directed by Sameer Ganguly was released in the year 1971. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee in lead roles while Ranjeet and Asit Sen also played important roles in the film. The melodious music of the film was given by famous music director, S.D. Burman and the songs were sung by Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. The lead actress, Rakhee was seen playing double role in the movie. The movie recieved an overwhelming response from the audience as well as from critics.

The movie starts with two twin sisters, Kanchan and Kamini ( Rakhee ), who are totally different from each other. Kanchan is a typical Indian girl who is shy and lovely in nature while her twin sister, Kamini is totally a western material who loves to flirt with people. The problem arises when both the girls falls for the same man which has been played by Shashi Kapoor in the film. However, the guy gets more fascinated to Kamini because of her boldness. But the conditions gets changed suddenly and the things strats turning on the other side much to the surprise of both the sisters.
