Bollywood movie, Sitara, directed by Meraj was released on June 13, 1980. The movie starred Mithun Chakraborthy and Zarina Wahab in lead roles while T. P. Jain, Kanhaiyalal, Mac Mohan, Yunus Parvez, Agha, Paintal and Dinesh Thakur also played important characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was given by none other than the well known veteran music director Rahul Dev Burman while the songs were rendered by Bhupendra Singh, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle etc.

The movie starts with two love birds, Kundan ( Mithun Chakraborthy ) and Dhaniya ( Zarina Wahab ). They are childhood sweethearts and wants to get married soon. Dhaniya wants to attain some money before getting married. So they both decides to travel to city. They arrive in the city but soon realises that getting job in the city is not an easy task at all. Dhaniya decides to be an actress as she is good at acting. After few initial failures, Dhaniya finally gets a role. Soon after the release of the film, she becomes an overnight star.

Kundan, who has done a lot a effort in arranging that role for Dhaniya, is also happy for her success. But he is unable to become a part of the success of Dhaniya, who is now the famous bollywood star with the name Sarita. Sarita being a rich personality now forgets about their plan and instead of saving money ends up spending more and more money. Kundan then realises that he has lost her Dhaniya and Sarita has taken the place of Dhaniya. Kundan decides to leave for his hometown.
