Bollywood movie, Swades : We The People, written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker was released on December 17, 2004. The movie starred Shahrukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi in lead roles. The music of the film was given by A.R. Rehman and the songs were rendered by Udit Naryan, Alka Yagnik, Hariharan, Kailash Kher, Sadhna Sargam, A.R.Rehman, Madhushree etc. The film was distributed under the banner of Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. Ltd.. The movie was first offered to bollywood star Hrithik Roshan but went in the kitty of Shahrukh after his refusal. Shahrukh won the Filmfare Best Actor award for his superb performance in the film. Singer, Udit Narayan, also won National Film Award for Best male Playback Singer.

The movie starts with Mohan Bhargava ( Shahrukh Khan ), who is an NRI working at NASA. He returns to India to bring back his Kaveri Amma so that he could provide her all the comforts and luxury. He visits her remote village, Charanpur. Kaveri Amma is living with a young woman named Geeta, who is a teacher in the local village school. When Mohan ask Kaveri Amma about his reason to come back, she simply asks for some time so that she could make a decision, whether to go with him or not. Kaveri Amma decides that she will go with Mohan only after Geeta get married and settled with someone.

After spending few days at the village, Mohan cpme sto know about the several problems such as discrimination and child marriage that are rampant in the village. Mohan manages to change the mindset of villagers and they start sending their children to Geeta’s school. Mohan also starts developing a liking for Geeta. Kaveri Amma sends Mohan to collect dues from Ramdas who is residing in another village. Mohan gets disturbed after seeing the poverty and other problems the villagers are facing there. Now Mohan has to decide whether he wants to go back to his comforst life in Us or he wants to settle in the village to help in bettering the villagers life.
