Bollywood movie, Tapasya, directed by Anil Ganguly was released in the year 1976. The movie starred Parikshat Sahni and Rakhee Gulzar in lead roles while Manju Bhatia, Lalita Pawar, Nasir Hussain, Om Shivpuri, Asrani, Lalita Kumari, Birbal, A. K. hangal and Sunder also played important roles in the film. The meldoious music of the movie was directed by none other than Ravindra Jain while the songs were rendered by Kishore Kumar, Hemlata, Aarti Mukherjee etc.

The movie starts with Indrani Sinha aka Indu ( Rakhee Gulzar ), who is the eldest child of Sinha family. Sinha family comprises of Indu’s father Chandranath ( A. K. Hangal ), her two younger sisters and a brother. Indu is in love with Dr. Sagar Veram ( Parikshat sahni ), who is also her family doctor. They both are planning to get married in near future. But problem arises when Sagar’s mother proposes a condition for the marraige of Indu and Sagar that Indu will have to leave her family responsibilty. She wanst Indu to take the full responsibilty of her son and household.

However, Indu refuse to do so as she doe not want to quit her responsibilty towards her family. Condition becomes even bitter when Chandranath passes away and now only one left for taking care of the family is Indu. She decides to marry sagar only when her sisters and brother grow up and get settled in their life. Years later, her brother, Vinod ( Asrani ) is now a graduate and ahs got a handsome job in a firm. Vindo is offered to marry his boss’s daughter but the condition is that he will ahve to starts living with them only. He agrees to do so leaving behind Indu to look after her sister once again.
