The action thriller Thanedaar was released on December 14, 1990. The movie was directed by Raj N Sippy and produced by Sanjay Ray. The important roles in the movie were played by Sanjay Dutt, Jaya Prada, Jeetendra and Madhuri Dixit while the roles of Tej Sapru, Goga Kapoor, Beena, Satish Shah and Kiran Kumar were equally important. The music of the film was directed by Bappi Lahiri while the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Pankaj Udhas, Amit Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Alka Yagnik and Anuradha Paudwal.

As suggested by the title of the film Thanedaar, the genre of the movie was an action movie that revolves around an honest and diligent Police Inspector Jagdish Chandra ( Dalip Tahil ). Inspector Jagdish was investigating against Ajghar Singh ( Kiran Kumar) and this was when he was killed by an attacker ( Mahavir Shah ) who was hired through Peter ( Tej Sapru ) and Lawrence ( Goga Kapoor ). He had two young boys, one of whom Brijesh ( Sanjay Dutt ) who killed the person killing his father. He was then taken by Peter and Lawrence.

The other son, Avinash ( Jeetendra ) is adopted by the police commissioner who grows up to be a police inspector like his dad. Meanwhile Brijesh who was in prison, was released and after attempting to rob a jewelry store, he flees with his girlfriend, Chanda ( Madhuri Dixit ) to the same village where his dad used to live. He had a fight with Avinash in the train and he mistakenly throws him out. The twist in the story comes when Avinash’s wife, Sudha ( Jayapradha ) arrives there to look for her husband.
