Bollywood history drama, The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey, directed by Ketan Mehta and written by Ranjit Kapoor was released on August 12, 2005. The movie starred Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee in lead roles while Toby Stephen, Amisha Patel, Mukesh Tiwari, Kiron Kher, Varsha Usgaonkar, Om Puri, Tom Alter and Shahbaaz Khan also played significant characters in the film. The hit music of the movie was composed by the well knwon music director A. R. Rehman while the songs were beautifully crooned by Reena Bhardwaj, Madhushree, Srinivas, Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher, Bonnie Chakraborthy, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Karthik Das baul.

The movie starts with a guy named Mangal Pandey ( Aamir Khan ), who is working as a sepoy in the army of East India Company. Hindustani soldiers come across a rumour that the catridges of a new rifle were greased with the dead flesh of cows and pigs. They all then decides to protest againts it. Soon they recieved assurance from their officer captian William Gordon ( Toby Stephens ) that the catridges will be replaced. Mangal confronts the officer and he assures him about the replcamenet of the catridges.

Meanwhile Mangal meets witha courtesan named Heera ( Rani Mukherjee ) and instantly falls in love with her. Problem arises when Mangal reveals that the company had no intention of replacing the catridges at all. Enraged mangal then incites a rebellion in the Hindustani soldiers. What will the result of this rebellion? Whether Mangal will be able to fight against the East India Company on his own?
