Umrao Jaan was a biographical drama released on November 3, 2006 under the banner of J P Films. The movie had been directed and produced by J P Dutta. The top roles in the movie were played by Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Aishwarya Rai and Sunil Shetty whereas the roles of Divya Dutta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Himani Shivpuri were also important. The music of the film had been directed by Anu Malik and the songs were sung by Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Richa Sharma and Javed Akhtar.

Umrao Jaan is directed by the famous director J P Dutta who have several hits under his name like Border, LOC. It has always been the case that the movies directed by J P Dutta are based on some different themes and so is the case with Umrao Jaan. The movie is rich with the environment of previous era but the only thing that adds to its disadvantage is that the movie is very long and has too many songs. The story is all about Umrao Jaan ( Aishwarya Rai ) who was a poetess living in Avadh and was loved by many.

Umrao was Amiran, an eight year old daughter of a middle classed family, when she first came to Lucknow. Umrao’s father ( Parikshit Sahni ) worked as a jamadar at the Bahu Begum ka Makhbara to earn money. He also gave the evidence to help Dilawar Khan ( Vishwajeet Pradhan ) to be sentenced to jail for ten years. He took his revenge by kidnapping little Amiran and selling her to a kotha run by Khanum Sahib ( Shabana Azmi ). This was where Amiran was given the name Umrao. Maulvi Sahib ( Kulbhushan Kharbanda ) imparted her education, Bismillah ( Divya Dutta ) and others helped her learn poetry.
