Water was a musical romantic drama released on March 9, 2007. The movie was directed by Deepa Mehta and produced by David Hamilton. The top most roles were enacted by Seema Biswas, John Abraham, Raghuveer Yadav, Lisa Ray and Sarala while supporting roles were played by Vinay Pathak, Waheeda Rehman, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Deepa Mehta. The music was directed by A R Rahman and the songs were sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Richa Sharma, Sadhana Sargam, Raqueeb Alam and Kaushiki.

Water is the movie directed by Deepa Mehta that raises the issue of pains and struggles faced by the widows. Life of widows after their husband’s death becomes very harsh and they face many difficulties. Not only this, the movie also raises topics of poverty, corruption, child prostitution, religion and prohibited love. The beginning and ending of the movie is marked by the element water. The story of the movie revolves around the era of 1930s that is before independence and around a house of widows in the Hindu temple.

Madhumati ( Manorama ) runs a prostitution racket and with the help of Gulabi ( Raghuvir Yadav ) she is able to make money by providing the widows to the rich people as the call girls. There is an also love story taking place at the aashram. Narayan ( John Abraham ), a Gandhian fell in love with a widow of the Madhumati’s house, Kalyani ( Lisa Ray ). Narayan proposes Kalyani to marry him and she decides to go against Madhumati’s rules. Madhumati tried to infect her mind but she was strong enough to take her decisions. The other widows in the house are a 8 year old widow, Chuyia ( Sarala ) and Shakuntala ( Seema Biswas ).
