Zubeidaa was a romantic biographical movie released on January 19, 2008. The movie was directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Farouq Rattonsey. The main roles in the movie were played by Rekha, Manoj Bajpai, Karisma Kapoor and Amrish Puri while Surekha Sikri and Rajit Kapoor were also there in the film. The music of the film was directed by A R Rahman and the songs were sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Richa Sharma, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh and Lata Mangeshkar.

Zubeidaa was directed by the famous director Shyam Benegal who had also produced several movies before based on the similar theme like Manthan, Junoon, Kalyug and Sardari Begum. The movie is the story of a young man trying to find more about the life and times of his mother Zubeidaa ( Karisma Kapoor ). The movie is the story set in early 1950s when the states have been merged into a republic. Zubeidaa is the daughter of the film maker Suleman Seth ( Amrish Puri ).

Zubeidaa had great interest of acting and thus acted in one film without telling her father about that. When he came to know about this, he hastily arranged her marriage with Mehboob Alam. They marries and one day divorces. At a polo matach, she is introduced to Maharaja Vijayendra Singh ( Manoj Bajpai ) who was smitten by her beauty. He proposed her at a celebration ball. Entrusting her son Riyaz ( Rajit Kapoor ) she agrees to become his second wife. She comes to know about Maharaja’s first wife Mandira ( Rekha ) in Fatehpur.
