Vishal Bhardwaj, a talented director, portrayed the Ruskin Bond’s novel ‘THE BLUE UMBRELLA‘ on the celluloid for children. He made his directional debut with a children’s movie MAKDEE (2002), story of a girl and a witch. THE BLUE UMBRELLA is a story of a village( in Himachal Pradesh), an umbrella(which is an object of envy in hamlet), a kid and a tea stall owner. The movie is made for the multiplexes viewer.
The story starts with the Biniya (Shreya Sharma), an 11 year old girl, who found a vibrant Blue Umbrella. Also Nandkishore Khatri (played by Pankaj Kapur) is the other person who gets smitten by the beauty of Blue Umbrella. Nandkishore Khatri runs a tea stall in the village of Himachal, and he is scruffy and miser (spend money as less as possible) by nature. He also has the habit of cheating children in order to get money from them. The Blue umbrella is presumed to be mythical and provides immense luck and power to the one who possessed it. Nandkishore Khatri tries as much as he can to covet the Blue Umbrella but always fails in his deed. Soon the entire village gets to know about the Blue Umbrella and this disturbs the peace of whole village ( as greed for Umbrella breaks the good relationship of villagers). And on a day the vibrant Blue Umbrella goes missing and whole village suspects Nandkishore Khatri aka Nandu responsible for this offence. But Biniya is so determined to get her Blue Umbrella back that she makes her own investigation team including ‘Nandu‘ and unfurls the truth which is all too surprising (just like MAKDEE).
Pankaj kapoor as always is the dominent person in the movie in terms of acting. But the new discovery, the sweet village girl, Shreya sharma has also performed well enough to compete with Pankaj. Cinematography is not of good quality. Blue Umbrella is the movie which will bring smile on your face. And also the movie gives a message at the end of the show. It is a must watch movie for children as well as adults.
