Calcutta Mail was a thriller movie released on September 5, 2003 under the banner of Siri Media Arts. The movie was directed by Sudhir Mishra and produced by Mukesh Udeshi. The significant roles were played by Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Rani Mukherjee and Saurabh Shukla while the roles of Sayaji Shinde and Satish Kaushik supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Viju Shah and the songs were sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shaan, Adnan Sami and Pamela Jain.

The movie Calcutta Mail is directed by Sudhir Mishra who has earlier directed the movies like Dharavi, Main Zinda Hoon and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. The movie was earlier titled as “Waapsi” and is said to be inspired from Telugu film, Choodalani Vundi. The story of the movie revolves around Avinash ( Anil Kapoor ) who has came from Bihar to Kolkata also known as the City of Joy. He boarded the train at the Howrah station. He also had an affair with high profile politician’s daughter ( Manisha Koirala ).

The reason why he has migrated to Kolkata is that he is looking for a man named Lakhan Yadav ( Sayaji Shinde ). Avinash came across Bulbul ( Rani Mukherji ), an aspiring writer, in Kolkata, and liked her this quality that she changed her identity to understand rice sellers better for her novels. He had no option but to share room with her in the busy Basti. Bulbul also started taking lot of interests in him. Avinash looked Lakhan everywhere be it trams, markets or the underground rails but didn’t find him.
