The romantic thriller Chameli was released on January 9, 2004 under the banner of Pritish Nandy Communications. The movie was directed by Sudhir Mishra and produced by Rangita Pritish Nandy. The important roles in the movie were played by Kareena Kapoor, Rinke Khanna, Rahul Bose and Yashpal Sharma while the roles of Makrand Deshpande and Anupama Varma were also important. Music of the film was directed by Sandesh Shandilya and the songs were sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Javed Ali and Udit Narayan.

Chameli was initially directed by the director Anant Balani who directed movies like Joggers Park and Mumbai Matinee who was not able to complete the movie after his untimely demise. It was then the director Sudhir Mishra took over and completed the movie. Music was given by Shandesh Shandhaliya who also gave the music for Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Road and Rules. The story of the movie is a love story between a man who lost his wife and a professional prostitute. The romance is most unlikely and started on a pavement in thunderous night.

On one rainy night in Mumbai, Aman Kapoor, 32, ( Rahul Bose ) was driving through the city and was haunted by the memories of his beloved wife ( Rinke Khanna ) who lost her life in a tragic accident that happened in a rainy night. Even Chameli ( Kareena Kapoor ) was terrified by the rain as she was lured by her uncle and sold to a brothel when she was a young and innocent girl. It is this rain that bring them together and changed their relations altogether.
