Bollywood action drama, Coolie, directed by Manmohan Desai and written by Kadar Khan was released on November 14, 1983. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan and Rati Agnihotri in lead roles while Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Krishan Dhawan, Suresh Oberoi, Shoma Anand, Goga Kapoor, Puneet Issar, Shubha Khote and Om Shivpuri also played significant characters in the film. The hit music of the movie was composed by none other than veteran hit music director jodi laxmikant-Pyarelal while the songs were rendered by Suresh Wadkar, Shabbir Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Asha Bhonsle, Alka Yagnik and Anuradha Paudwal.

The movie starts with a beautiful girl named Salma ( Waheeda Rehman ), who is liked by a notorious criminal Zafar Khan ( Kadar Khan ). Zafar wants to marry her but she and her father are not willing to do so. Fortunatley, Zafar is arrested by police becuase of his criminal activities. When Zafar is released from the jail, he goes to meet Salma but get shocked to learn that she is now married to a guy named Aslam Khan ( Satyendra Kapoor ). Zafar seeks revenge from Salma and ends up killing her father and husband. Salma looses her memory and Zafar takes advantage of it convincing her that she is his wife.

Salma get seperated from her son named Iqbal ( Amitabh Bachchan ). Years later, Iqbal is now a grown up guy and works as a coolie at railway station. He meets with a guy named Sunny ( Rishi Kapoor ), who is reporter by profession and befriends him. Iqbal reveals that his mother Salma is alive but has forgotten everything. Iqbal falls in love with a girl named Julie ( Rati Agnihotri ).
