The action drama Hindustani was released in 1996. The movie was directed by S Shankar. The major roles were played by Kamal Hasan, Sukanya and Kasturi while other roles were played by Aruna Irani, Urmila Matondkar and Manisha Koirala. The music of the film was given by A R Rahman while the lyricist was Siva Ganesh. The singers were Hariharan, Sujata, K S Chitra and Swarnalatha. The story was written by S Shankar.

The movie presents Senapathy ( Kamal Hasan ) who was against the British rule in India. He decides to rise up against the prevailing British rule. For this he joins the Subash Chandra Bose’s Indian Liberation Army. He was given the job of destroying the opponent’s tanks along with his fellow soldiers. During one such attack he was captured and was persecuted and punished by the British. A girl named Namrata ( Sukanya ) took care of Senapathy after he was set free.

Soon they got married and Namrata gave birth to two children Chandrabose ( Kamal Hasan ) and Kasthoori ( Kasturi ). Chandrabose leaves his honest father to earn huge money. He bribes an officer to get a job in transport department. During a mishap Kasthoori gets seriously burned. When taken to hospital the doctor asks them to report to the police or pay money, police in turn asked for money. Kasturi dies and Senapathy decides to teach the corrupt officials of the society a lesson and soon discovers that his son is one of them.
