Bollywood movie, Junoon, written and directed by Shyam Benegal was released in the year 1978. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, Nafisa Ali and Shabana Azmi in lead roles while Jalal Agha, Benjamin Gilani, Tom Alter, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval and Sushma Seth also played important characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was directed by none other than the famous music director Vanraj Bhatia while the songs were rendered by Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhonsle etc.

The movie starts with a mughal named Sarfaraz Khan, who rebels against some britishers and ends up killing many of them. Some britishers amonst them amange to escape from there. Three womens, Grandma, Mariam and Ruth ( Nafisa Ali ) of a british family also manage to escape from there and take shelter in Lala Ramjilal ( Kulbhushan Kharbanda ). Lala Ramjilal has his own interest in giving shelter to these devastated womens. But he fails to keep their presence in his home a secret from others. As a result of which, Javed Khan ( Shashi Kapoor ) forcibly enters in his home and takes the three womens away alongwith him.

Javed then takes them to his own house. Javed gets atrracted towards the beauty of Ruth and decides to make her his second wife. However, Ruth refuse to marry him and is supported by Javed’s first wife, Firdaus ( Shabana Azmi ). Javed whoever is determined to get married with Ruth. Things get more complicated when Ruth too starts developing feeling for Javed and agrees to get married with him.
