The social drama Raincoat was released on December 24, 2004 under the banner of Shree Venkatesh Films. The movie has been directed by Rituparno Ghosh and produced by Shrikant Mohta and Mahendra Soni. The main roles in the film were played by Ajay Devgan, Anu Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Surekha Sikri while Mouli ganguly and Sameer Dharmadhikari were also there in the film. Music of the film was directed by Debjyoti Mishra and the songs were sung by Shubha Mudgal, Meena Mishra, Hariharan and Gulzar.

The director Rituparno Ghosh makes a debut into the Bollywood with this film and his previous Bengali Film Choker Bali was a hit. The pair of Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai has again been used in this film after the films like “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin” and “Khakee”. The story of the movie is about two Bihari characters Manoj ( Ajay Devgan ) and Niru ( Aishwarya Rai ) and is set against the backdrop of a rainy noon. Manoj wanted a job and thus leaves his mother and travel to Kolkata. He faces different situations here that he never thought of.

The city offers him various things like success, recover from his sad financial situations and also meet his earlier love Niru. She betrayed him and married a different person for money when Manoj had nothing to offer her except his dreams. On a rainy day wearing his friend’s old raincoat, Manoj decided to pay her a visit at her home. She met him with darkness in her house which was also crowded by furniture. The lovers met after a long six years and remembered their past moments that they shared with each other.
