The social drama Sutradhaar was released in the year of 1987. The movie was directed by Chandrakant Joshi and produced by Vasudev Deshingar. The main roles in the movie were played by Girish Karnad, Nana Patekar, Smita Patil and Joginder while the presence of Asha Lata, Neelu Phule, Sudhir Dalvi and Gajanan Jagirdar supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Laxmikant Kudalkar and Pyarelal while the songs were sung by Mohammad Aziz, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Kishore Kumar and Hariharan.

The movie Sutradhaar was a social movie that revolved mostly around a girl named Prerna ( Smita Patil ) who is the daughter of a head master working in the town’s local school. She has a good friend named Kumar ( Nana Patekar ) who was her childhood friend but was not in contact for a long time. She comes across him who is now working as a teacher in the same school. As all usual movies the movie also has a local and cruel zamindar ( Girish Karnad ) who plays a negative role.

The zamindar has managed to empower the village people but it was Kumar who stood up against his cruelty and supported the people ans it is because of this Prerna is attracted towards his determination and courage. Zamindar was the person who has severely beaten his father several years ago. Soon both fall in love with each other and get married to each other. The twist in the story comes when Kumar wanted to become the head of the town.
